For 30 years, Spirit Halloween, the largest seasonal Halloween retailer in North America, has had its finger on the pulse of pop culture, as the year’s most unforgettable moments often translate to the most memorable Halloween costumes. In recent years, Charlie Sheen won our attention, Lady Gaga’s fashion choices had us buzzing, and the cast of The Jersey Shore fist-pumped onto the scene. In 2013, Halloween enthusiasts everywhere will be twerkin’ what their momma gave them.

To celebrate its 30th Anniversary, Spirit Halloween tapped into the archives to identify the box office hits, small screen stars and celebrities that kept the nation talking. The first-ever “Pop-Costume Index,” illustrates the intersection between pop culture and popular costumes during the past three decades. This dynamic infographic includes fun facts, such as:

· Perennial Favorites – Princess Leia’s famous gold bikini debuted in 1983 and continues to be a popular costume 30 years later. Even today, nothing says “Bad Guy” like Darth Vader, another sought-after look.

· Partners in Crime – Batman and his sensational counterparts – Robin, Catwoman and The Joker – were top costumes in 1989, 1992, 1997 and 2008.

· Take a Bite out of the Costume Competition – Twilight’s overwhelming popularity in 2009 resurrected a Halloween costume classic – vampires – in the same way Pirates of the Caribbean helped pirate-themed costumes become a Halloween favorite in 2003.

· Not Just for Kids – Children’s hit television programs such as the Care Bears (1986), Barney (1993) and SpongeBob SquarePants (2004) not only won the hearts of kids across the country, but also led the way in costume trends for adults.

Smoking Timeline [Infographic]

To quit smoking cigarettes may seem like a simple goal for some people, but as many smokers know (myself included), it’s easy enough to talk about quitting cigarettes, but actually doing so can be much more difficult. I’ve tried unsuccessfully to quit more than once, and while I know that quitting for good might be rough, it will be worth it. It may take a few hard weeks to fully kick the habit, but once it’s done the health benefits are completely worth the struggle (and that’s what’s most important, right?).

Today’s infographic gives us a look at both the short term and long term benefits of putting down cigarettes permanently. Benefits start kicking in as early as 20 minutes, with blood pressure, body temperature and pulse rates going back to normal. A few more months down the line and you’re starting to breathe easier and don’t get winded as often during physical activity. That’s just the beginning, too: risk of deadly disease drops significantly after a few short years of non-smoking, and that’s something worth considering.

Would You Live in a Haunted House? [Infographic]

Many holidays that we celebrate have one or two traditions that truly define them, but they also have many other smaller traditions. Halloween is no exception to the rule: while dressing in costumes and trick-or-treating are the most defining Halloween traditions, we also have things like pumpkin carving, hay rides and haunted houses that are associated with the holiday. Haunted houses can be a lot of fun to visit around Halloween, with all of the decorations and people putting on a scary show, but the question is: would you actually live in one?

Today’s infographic from the Huffington Post and Realtor.com shows us just how many Americans would choose to buy or live in a haunted home, given the choice to do so. Out of those surveyed, 62% would consider buying a “haunted” house while 35% said that they have already lived in one. When asked what would make a house haunted, most agreed that a cemetery on the property would do the trick, although the answers ranged all the way to having an old battlefield near the home.

Which States Love Dogs the Most? [Infographic]

Dogs are one of America’s top pets; they are man’s best friend, after all. America has a huge amount of dog owners, with one in three households being home to a furry friend, and two thirds of that number consider their dog a family member. Which states in the U.S. tend to own more dogs than others, though? On the other hand, which states have the fewest percentage of dog owners?

Today’s infographic from the Huffington Post gives us a look at some statistics for dog ownership across America. Most people getting a new dog are going to do so at a shelter, which is usually always good for the dog and shelter alike. Thankfully, very few people obtain their dog as a gift, since giving a pet as a gift can often be a bad idea.

Don’t Drink and Tweet [Infographic]

Scenario: it’s another weekend night, so it’s time for you and your friends to go out and have some fun, nothing out of the ordinary. You’re having a good time hanging out, kicking back and occasionally checking your phone for time, texts, status updates or what have you; you’re probably not thinking about your past relationships at all. But then you knock one or six drinks back and suddenly that glorious machine in your hand holds some new-found power: you’re going to tell your ex just exactly what you think about them and you’ll be damned if the rest of the world doesn’t know too.

Most of us have probably been in a similar situation with phones/social media and alcohol, and man is that next morning ever terrible. Running clean-up on embarrassing social situations can be bad enough, but doing so with a hangover, knowing full well you may have just burned some bridges? No thank you.

Today’s graphic from Entrepreneur.com gives us a few examples of why you should probably put either the phone or the drink down if you’ve already had a few. Drunk dialing, while no less embarrassing, was so much simpler before the smartphone and social media. You have a few, make a bad call, then never speak to the person again (probably). With things like Facebook and Twitter, though, now you’ve got a magical megaphone to broadcast all of those sloppy emotions to everyone you know, and no one wants to see that.

Hollywood Family Tree [Infographic]

Most people know big Hollywood names like Jeff Bridges and Francis Ford Coppola, but some people may not know that they, like many other big names in Hollywood, are parts of large acting and entertainment families with many other prominent names. Jason Schwartzman has teamed up with Wes Anderson on multiple occasions with films like “The Fantastic Mr. Fox,” and “The Darjeeling Limited,” and he also happens to be directly related to Francis Ford Coppola. Some folks also might not know that Academy Award winner Nicolas Cage is another nephew to Mr. Coppola. That’s just the beginning, too.

Today’s infographic gives us a look at some of the most iconic Hollywood families and how they’re connected to each other as well as other families. David Arquette’s father Lewis was in the business before he was, and his sister Patricia was married to Nic Cage for years. Kate Hudson’s father, Bill, was a musician who married Goldie Hawn and had Kate and her brother Oliver.
