World’s Largest Super Cranes – Infographic

At MMI Tank and Industrial Services we use cranes a lot during our industrial construction projects. So we thought it would be fun to create this infographic of the Worlds Largest Cranes. Can you believe in the last 6 years the lifting capacity for cranes has more than tripled? To help understand just how much these cranes can lift, we converted their lifting capacities into other fun objects such as elephants and killer whales. Famous Personality Types [infographic]

Personality and self assessment tests are always a good exercise to run through when needing a personal boost. Though not the end all be all of you and what you are good at, only you can really know that. These tests are always helpful when one is unsure of a direction to go in or how to best pursue their goals.

Being into pop-culture is something that has always excited me. Being able to relate to current times and the people that are in it makes me feel grounded. Not unfortunately, when I took this test I was tied between two personality styles. A person with more than just one personality type (this doesn’t make you a crazy person) gives you different viewpoints that show you can exhibit more than one way of thinking.

Just for some moral support, I can look at the following infographic and see for myself some of the most iconic people. I don’t believe that I will ever be the president or sing a hit song that brings tears to people’s eyes.

What is great about this infographic is that you can study these real life successful people. You can recall a specific scene the actor was in, or a famous speech that was given in history to derive a little energy out of your results. As the saying goes, if they can do it, so can you. [via]

Youth Sports Injuries [infographic]

Alas, football season is upon us, and if you live in Texas, you know high school football is just as popular as the NFL. Young boys in Texas are practically pre-destined to play this impact sport. Some are destined for greatness (Johnny Football anyone?), while others have their go in middle school and slowly fail out of the sport. However, as sports continue to increase in aggressiveness, children are continuing to risk their health for it.

My cousin for example, is a tall, lanky, 12 year old, who is having his first try at 7th grade football. He was giving it his all: refusing to miss practice, practicing at home–then, BAM!–some massive child took a cheap sack at him, which resulted in a torn meniscus.  Poor kid, a torn meniscus at 12 years old. Are competitive sports really worth it when young children are subject to such serious injury? Today’s infographic gives some stats on youth sports injuries and how your child can avoid them. Women in Aviation [infographic]

Amelia Earhart was an inspiration to women everywhere. In a world where men dominated operating machinery, Amelia was not afraid to demand to be included too! This was pre-WWII, and therefore it was almost unheard of for women to be interested in working on planes flying planes. Why would they? Aren’t they meant to be at home feeding children and cleaning the house? Earhart said no to these misogynistic questions, boarded her little Lockheed Vega 5B aircraft, and flew across the Atlantic to a farm in Culmore, Ireland, where a confused farmer asked her “Have you flown far?” to which she replied “from America”. This farm is now the site of a small museum dedicated to Earhart’s journey. After Earhart’s disappearance many theories were brewed up of where she disappeared too. One of these theories that aired on the National Geographic Channel is that she is still alive, moved to New Jersey and changed her name!

From 1960 till 1980 the amount of women pilots went from 4,218 to 26,896 pilots. when it comes to comparing the progress of commercial women pilots to other professions that are male dominated, the progress is small. Interestingly, the percentage of commercial women pilots is half of the percentage of female boat captains and operators (8.2%), a quarter of the percentage of female police officers (15%), and about one eighth of the percentage of female doctors (31.8%).

The Biggest Waves Ever Surfed [Infographic]

I’ve always wanted to learn how to surf. It looks so peaceful and zen, despite the fact that it is basically an art of controlled falling. I’ve gotten into some of the more modern ‘extreme’ boarding like snowboarding and skateboarding, but I feel like surfing is really the seed of these now so-called ‘extreme sports’.

It’s believed that the ancient Polynesians (progenitors of Hawaii) started the act of surfing. The first written record was by Joseph Banks aboard the HMS endeavor in 1779, although the cultural custom of surfing most likely predates this record. The ancient Hawaiians regarded surfing, or he’e nalu (wave sliding), as an almost sacred activity to communicate with the ocean and pray for their protection and strength. I bet every single one of the surfers on this infographic were praying as well. Most likely praying for their life not to end after riding these giant tsunami-waves.

As you can see, this infographic uses the friggin’ Statue of Liberty as a scale for how massive these waves are. EFF THAT’S HUGE. You can even see all of the puny air we’ve gotten through other methods – snowboarding, skating, jumping, etc. Nothing can quite get you higher than that thing that takes up about 70% of earth.

Breakfast From Around the World [infographic]

In honor of the final episode of Breaking Bad that aired this week, let’s give a shout out to breakfast–the most important meal of the day–and by far, Walt Jr.’s favorite.

Today’s infographic explores more than just bacon and eggs. It gives us a look at dining tables of breakfast eaters from around the world. Australians apparently prefer a brown spread called Vegemite on their toast in the morning; the Japanese enjoy soy beans on rice; the Moroccans like lamb stew; and Argentineans frequently sip Yerba Mate–a delicious, highly caffeinated tea.

And I couldn’t profess my love for breakfast properly without acknowledging a Texas favorite, the all-mighty and powerful breakfast taco. My personal favorite: potato, egg, cheese, and nopalitos (prickly pear!).

We’ve also probably all heard that in order to start your day right you need to eat a healthy breakfast. And according to today’s infographic, eating breakfast everyday makes you less likely to develop diabetes, and may even decrease your chances of becoming obese. Kids who eat breakfast also score 17.5% higher on math tests!

And let’s not forget that winter is approaching. I think eating a hot breakfast when the weather gets chilly is particularly satisfying. For me, a bowl of oatmeal or miso soup is the best way to wake up.
