National Nurses Week [infographic]

This week is dedicated to taking a step back and appreciating the backbone of the healthcare industry: nurses. Nurses do everything from aiding the doctor to keeping weary patients entertained. It is no wonder why nurses are such amazing people. It takes a great amount of patience, selflessness, and passion to excel at this job. A lot of hard work and dedication goes into becoming a nurse, and whenever someone decides that this is the appropriate career path for him or her, they must understand that they are devoting their lives to other people and that, in turn, requires a lot of responsibility. So, thank you nurses, for looking out for us.

If that sounds like you, and you’re thinking about becoming a nurse, then you are definitely in luck. According to a U.S. News and World Report, nurses are in pretty high demand. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that 37,100 new positions for nurse practitioners will be available before 2022. The world population is steadily growing, and with it, the number of sick people that need to be taken care of. So if you’re looking for job security, the medical field is definitely where it’s at.

Whether this is something you want to do or not, always remember that nurses are giving every bit of themselves so that the world can be a better place for everyone to live. So next time you have to make a visit to the doctor, thank the people that assist you. [Happy Nurses Week!]

How To Extend Your Life At Work [Infographic]

I hate talking about work just as much as the next person, I would much rather talk about the football game- or just drink a beer and talk about nothing. However, considering the average American spends 90,000 hours at work over the course of their lifetime deserves a conversation.

There have been many infographics posted about how work (or working too much) can contribute to an early death. With this information, the answer seems simple- don’t go to work! Well, if you have bills, rent, and car payments hanging over your head this is simply not possible. So all the average person can do is figure out why bad habits to avoid at work that are the #1 contributors to an early death.

According to this infographic, the more an individual sits down during their waking hours the shorter their life expectancy is. While the actual numbers may be a little more fuzzy- sitting down (no matter how good it feels) is not terribly healthy. Try and find excuses to stand up and mover around at work. This can be hard sometimes- but it can mean moving a trashcan further from a desk, or simply standing at your desk.

Work is a touchy issue for most. With all the recent findings on how unhealthy the average work environment is- combined with the fact that unless you’re born into a large trust fund you have to work 40+ hours to survive, it can often feel like a no-win situation. The Complete History Of Coffee [infographic]

Today’s infographic gives us a look at the history of America’s favorite pick-me-up: coffee. An estimated 1.6 billion cups of coffee are enjoyed around the world each day. This infographic shows a pleasantly structured historical timeline of the process of coffee making and some of the people involved.

Make no mistake about it, coffee is an art form to many. Some people take their coffee seriously and are constantly searching for ways to create the perfect cup. The best method I’m told is not the french press method–which I had grown quite fond of. The single-cup pour-over method is apparently the best way to go. A passionate coffee maker, barista, and local business owner recently enlightened me with this information, and also shared the secret of presoaking coffee grounds to achieve a “blooming effect.” If you pour hot water over your coffee grounds and let them soak for 30-45 seconds apparently gases are able to escape and the coffee is able to “bloom,” which results in a better tasting beverage.

I think it’s also worth noting that 54% of coffee drinkers say that coffee makes them feel more like themselves. But maybe they just like their caffeinated selves a little bit better. Either way, check out today’s infographic to learn more about your favorite cup of joe. [Via]

World’s Largest Super Cranes – Infographic

At MMI Tank and Industrial Services we use cranes a lot during our industrial construction projects. So we thought it would be fun to create this infographic of the Worlds Largest Cranes. Can you believe in the last 6 years the lifting capacity for cranes has more than tripled? To help understand just how much these cranes can lift, we converted their lifting capacities into other fun objects such as elephants and killer whales. Help Wanted: Bridging the Gap in Today’s Skill Lacking Economy [infographic]

Jobs and careers are constantly on the minds of millions of Americans. We may be hungry for success, but do we have the right training and skills to actually achieve success? Today’s infographic discusses the growing “Skills Gap” in the American workforce.

A skills gap is defined (by The American Society for Training and Development) as “a significant gap between an organization’s current capabilities and the skills it needs to achieve its goals.” This means that employers and employees are not exactly on the same page when work needs to be done efficiently.

Why does this gap exist, you ask? The top reasons for the skills gap, according to today’s infographic, includes “skills of the workforce that don’t match company strategy, goals, markets, or business models; a lack of bench strength in the company’s leadership ranks; and less of an investment in training/a lack of support for employee learning and development in training/lack of support for employee learning and development.”

We spend thousands of dollars on college educations, yet we still aren’t given the right tools to be successful at our jobs? As a recent college graduate, this idea is quite terrifying. And this statement is equally unsettling: “Worldwide, young people are three times more likely than their parents to be out of work.”

How exactly we go about closing this skills gap, I can’t be sure of. But, I can say that mutual respect for employers and employees goes a long way when doing a job. Employers have to want to invest time and energy into helping their employees, and employees have to be willing to listen, be open to their employer’s wishes, and work hard. Caring about the work you do, who you work for, and who you work with, makes a huge difference in the quality of work that ends up being achieved at the end of the day. [Via]
