National Nurses Week [infographic]

This week is dedicated to taking a step back and appreciating the backbone of the healthcare industry: nurses. Nurses do everything from aiding the doctor to keeping weary patients entertained. It is no wonder why nurses are such amazing people. It takes a great amount of patience, selflessness, and passion to excel at this job. A lot of hard work and dedication goes into becoming a nurse, and whenever someone decides that this is the appropriate career path for him or her, they must understand that they are devoting their lives to other people and that, in turn, requires a lot of responsibility. So, thank you nurses, for looking out for us.

If that sounds like you, and you’re thinking about becoming a nurse, then you are definitely in luck. According to a U.S. News and World Report, nurses are in pretty high demand. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that 37,100 new positions for nurse practitioners will be available before 2022. The world population is steadily growing, and with it, the number of sick people that need to be taken care of. So if you’re looking for job security, the medical field is definitely where it’s at.

Whether this is something you want to do or not, always remember that nurses are giving every bit of themselves so that the world can be a better place for everyone to live. So next time you have to make a visit to the doctor, thank the people that assist you. [Happy Nurses Week!]

10 Facts You Should Know about Tapatio Hot Sauce [infographic]

A few years ago, I was all about adding Tabasco hot sauce to my food. I even carried a little miniature bottle of it in my backpack in college. Fast forward to a few weeks ago, I became obsessed with Sriracha. So much so, that I even posted an infographic about it. But alas, I have just recently become obsessed with a new hot sauce after a co-worker donated it to the office kitchen last week. It’s name is Tapatio hot sauce, and we have become inseparable. I have a bottle in my pantry, my purse, and at my work desk so that wherever I decide to eat, I’ll always be able to add a little Tapatio pizzazz to my meal. Never heard of Tapatio, or dare I say, even tried it?! If you’re ready to take your taste buds to a whole other level of flavor, I suggest you break off your commitment to your current hot sauce and give Tapatio a taste. You will not be disappointed! Fantasy Novels Deconstructed [Infographic]

Why do you like fantasy? As a fantasy-addict, I’ve had to answer this question many times to my father, middle school football coach, ex-girlfriend… But for any fantasy-junkie, the answer is simple: it’s awesome. However, as bizarre as it sounds, there are people who don’t like fantasy, who buy into the lie of, “It’s just a bunch of monsters, wizards and men with goatees swinging swords, and casting spells until the good guys just sort of ‘win’.” To be fair, that’s an accurate description of Robert Jordan’s “Wheel of Time” saga, (which was still pretty cool).

This infographic uses Tolkien’s works to break down the structure of epic fantasy. There are wizards, heroes, mythical races of elves, orcs, etc. But Tolkien’s work was so much more, he invented an entire lore and history of a fictional universe, he invented languages! He created a structure for later fantasy writers to follow, like Terry Goodkind or Brandon Sanderson.

Then there’s the new wave of fantasy writers, notably George R.R. Martin. This new breed of fantasy’s characters are grey, neither good nor bad (unless it’s Joffrey), and contain more plot-based writing than lore, creating a new realm of nerdy-awesomeness.

With the huge success of ‘Game of Thrones’ and ‘The Hobbit’ films, it seems like the masses are starting to think fantasy is cool too, but don’t stop there! Read the books! Then nerds like myself will find girlfriends/boyfriends who like fantasy just as much and live happily ever after. The end. [Via]

The Psychology of Book Abandonment [infographic]

How much time do you invest in a book you can’t get into before you decide it’s time to cut your losses? What is your breaking point? Goodreads put together an infographic highlighting the top-five books abandoned by Goodreads’ users. Unsurprisingly, three of the five I have abandoned myself. But reading this infographic got me thinking a lot about the psychology behind an abandoned book.

I rarely abandon books; I feel defeated when it happens. In fact, before today I would have claimed that I always finish books–even if I hate them. I abandoned Eat Pray Love with one chapter to go, Fifty Shades of Grey 250 pages in, and The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo after the first chapter. I haven’t read Casual Vacancy for fear of having an abandoned J.K. Rowling book on my record. All of these books were recommended to me. I am afraid that I tend to neglect books that are recommended and then lent to me to read. I generally read books according to where I am in life emotionally. If I am reading a book that I haven’t already created some prearranged attachment to based on the level of emotional support I need it to provide me at the time, I just can’t get into it.

Do you hide your book covers in the airport because your reading selection embarrasses you? The History Of Tranformers [Infographic]

I was basically raised by transformers, but Transformers being older than I am proves I wasn’t the first generation brought up by them. Let’s take a stroll down memory lane, and talk about our favorite frighting robots.

In 1983, the first generation of Transformers was born (i.e. the Optimus Prime and Megatron). This is when the favorites from the recent movies saw their beginnings, and there was no Shia LaBeouf- which may or may not be a good thing depending on who is reading this. There was no Megan Fox either-just fighting robots.

Fast forward 12 years, and my personal favorite- Tranformers: Beast Wars hit the scene. This took combined fighting robots with animals, to make fighting robot-animals. This may have been the best idea in the history of mankind- especially because of Rattrap, a robot-rat no-nonsense BAMF with a pistol and a shield. You had me at robo-rat.

In 2001, classic Transformers came back in full force with Transformers: Robots in Disguise. Transformers: Armada would follow a year later solidifying the return of the classic lineup.

And then 2007, we finally saw the ultimate showdown between the fighting robots from space on the big screen. Complete with modern cgi and camera equipment. The acting was… not great. But you don’t go see a movie about giant fighting robots that is also a camero for the acting. You go for the giant fighting robots.

Now it’s 2014, and there are already trailers for Tranformers: Age of Extinction. This will be the fourth Transformers movie to date, what will it be about? Maybe the title has some insight to offer.

The Evolution of the Geek [infographic]

First off, there are not enough infographics out there about Dungeons and Dragons, will someone send me one if they find a good one please? Second, screw this infographic. It started off really well with where the term “geek” came from, good deal! Then continues over to Geekus prime and onto computer geek; nothing is said about the computer geek, which is a very important geek, because he is what the internet geek is based upon!

Also, I am very annoyed by the book geek as I’m sure others are. Harry Potter, Narnia and Twilight are so general, all walks of life read those books, and the Lord of the Rings are perhaps more “geeky” but still very popular. What about Sci-fi books? Or old mediaeval times books? — So much more of a geek fest genre.

The artist got a little lazy on the “geek Chic” because these are not variants of geek chic, a theatre geek doesn’t dress that way to be ironic — a theatre hipster might. A food geek doesn’t dress that way either. These are more just hobbies people have. These are all things really upsetting me. I wouldn’t have had to complain about all this if someone had just made a decent D&D infographic.

By the way, I am playing my first game of Dungeons and Dragons today, and I cannot wait. Any advice will be appreciated.

Kids These Days [Infographic]

Get off my lawn with your iPads, ya hooligans! If you know kids these days, you’ll know that they just love technology, let me tell you what! In fact, there are so many different tools to utilize, it’s hard to even know what kinds to invest in. Cell phone, iphone, ipad, nexus, android, mac, pc, etc. It’s a bit boggling.

This infographic, done by a local college, investigates what percentages of Freshman students are bringing in what. Granted, this is a smaller, private college, so the results may be skewed from your own, but nevertheless illuminates what technologies are being utilized the most in preparation for BECOMING AN ADULT BY GOING TO COLLEGE (echo). In all seriousness though, technologies really are shaping the modern job market and what is possible in global communication, as well as education.

The top-most percentages correspond with the overall campus population. The smallest number of these happens to be desktop computers. This isn’t surprising due to the popular use of laptops for portability and for taking notes in class; but more and more I’ve found that tablets are becoming very popular for this particular task. It’d be awesome to know what percentage would prefer taking notes on tablets as opposed to laptops…

All in all it’s a great age to live in where media, art, and knowledge can be so easily communicated across our planet. The future of education really does lie in the digital realm.
